Get Rid of That Page Counter! (continued) I went to a local company's Web site the other day in search of the products they offer. I was under the impression that this was a big, reputable, contemporary company. When I arrived on their Web site, I saw an OK home page. As I scrolled down, I saw one of those popular page counters displaying the number of times the page had been requested. Needless to say, my vision of this company was ruined when I found out their Web page had only been accessed 754 times in the last year. Have you ever noticed that you don't see page counters on Yahoo, ESPN, or Disney's Web sites? Nor will you find one on IBM, Microsoft, or Cisco's pages. But you still see these counters on plenty of small to mid-sized businesses Web sites. I used to believe counters were implemented "because the designer could." But after researching the issue a bit, I found out that many of these firms believe the counter to be the main method for collecting site usage statistics. If you are not aware of the alternative for collecting site usage statisitics, read on.
The Alternative
The alternative to the counter is your Web server's log file. Briefly, the log file is a text file that is automatically appended every time someone visits your Web site. It tracks:
A log file is generated by most popular Web servers (ISS, Apache, and others) usually as part of the process that serves-up your Web pages to the public. If you are running one of these popular servers, you can access your own log files. If your Web site is hosted on a 3rd party Web server, site statistics are usually provided for free or as a paid service. Once log file information has been collected, it can be concatenated, parsed into usable statistics, and presented as graphic and/or alpha-numeric tables. This information can be displayed in most Web browsers and often output to popular spreadsheet formats. Once you have this information at your fingertips, you can get rid of that counter forever. If you need help with your server log files, making sense of them, or wonder how to exploit them, please contact us for a FREE consultation.
