How Friendly is
User-Friendly?
| What is user-friendly? In whose terms? Is your site user-friendly? These are some good questions to ask yourself. There's no strict formula and common sense often dictates.
Good usability can often be overlooked in lieu of functionality, technology, flash and sizzle, or the excitement of a new Web site design. With a little research and a touch of sensitivity, you can avoid usability issues that complicate your site, threaten your search engine rankings, tick-off your visitors, and erode your traffic.
Top 10 Mistakes
Made by New Web Site Owners
A little common sense and a ton of customer sensitivity makes for happy Web site visitors. Below are some of the more frequent mistakes made by new Web site owners.
- Slow Web site downloads. Cool Vs. functional home page
- Requiring a specific browser or plug-in
- Amateur or inconsistent appearance
- Inconsistent or overly complex navigation
- Missing or poorly communicated introduction. Failure to establish credibility.
- Poorly coded, non-standard pages
- Little or no contact information
- Outdated, irrelevant, and incorrectly spelled content
- Moving or renaming Web pages. Breaking visitors bookmarks.
- Jumping at the latest Internet technology

Get Rid of That
Page Counter!
| If you have a page counter that shows how many times your Web pages are accessed, you can get rid of it. Counters are "old hat" and may actually be hurting your reputation more than helping it.
If you like knowing just how popular your pages are, not to worry. You can still find out how often your Web pages are being accessed and more. Things like who's visiting your site, when, and what pages they like best are just a few of the statistics you can get. Best of all, these statistics are free or inexpensive at most.
Site Implementation: the End Doesn't Always Justify
the Means
If your new Web site looks good and conveys your message, then good deal, end of story, right? Hardly. The fact is, poor Web site implementations cost millions of dollars each year in unnecessary Web site maintenance and complete site overhauls. Additional costs associated with low visitor confidence and reputations are less tangible but equally as devastating. The Web has become very much a commodity. History shows when things become a commodity, and providers rush to market, quality often suffers. So, how do you guard against becoming a victim of poor implementation?
